Let It Snow...

Yaaa for snow!

From the National Weather Service as of 4:05 PM EST Monday:

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 12 PM Tuesday to
6 PM EST Wednesday.

Scattered snow showers will develop across the North Carolina
mountains early Tuesday... increasing in coverage and intensity by
Tuesday evening. Storm total snowfall amounts of 4 to 7 inches
are expected especially in the higher elevations and on northwest
facing slopes. Some localized amounts of around a foot will also
be possible... especially along and near the Tennessee state line
in the higher elevations. Strong northwest winds of 25 to 30
mph... with gusts of up to 45 mph... could also create considerable
blowing of snow in affected locations. The combination of strong
winds and cold temperatures will also cause wind chill values to
fall to between zero and 10 below early Wednesday across much of
the higher terrain.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow and
blowing snow are expected. Strong winds and dangerous wind chills
are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or
impossible.

Gavin in Birmingham

Just a quick photo of Gavin on the bed Christmas morning at his Gran's house in Birmingham, AL.

Christmas in Birmingham

Well, its another Christmas under our belts. As usual, we spent this Christmas in Birmingham, AL visiting Lauren's family. We stayed at her Mothers house. It was fun, but of course boring...not because of her family...but just because Christmas is usually boring for adults. It was a nice respite though.

Smoky Mountain Elk

Lauren and Gavin caught these great photos of elk grazing out by the Cataloochee NPS Ranger Station in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park this afternoon. Just thought I would share. This is about a 30 minute drive up and over a mountain from our house. Not too far as the crow flies.

So just how cold was it last night? The low, outside temp on the top says it all. It should be only slightly warmer tonight...a balmy 15 :)

Cold Nights, Warmer Climate

Good Lord it is cold. 1:00 am...about to go to bed and it is already 19 F. We had a few snow flurries today but that was about it. I am beginning to think this Winter will be much like last winter - not much snow at all. It has just been too dry. El Nino, La Nina...if you ask me it is all because we have screwed up the climate.

At least the Bush administration has seen some of the writing on the wall and has accepted the compromise in Bali. Hopefully the next administration will take the threat of climate change more serious. All of you living along the coast in Florida should probably take this issue as a serious one when you vote next November. It is your butts on the line, not mine.

Just some photos...

Just wanted to post some photos. The first is a photo of Lauren and I up on "The Mountain"...just a photo of us I love. The other two are of Gavin that I just took this evening with my cell phone. It is going to be wicked cold here tonight...about 15...and it is already 25 at 6pm. He is trying to stay warm in his WeatherBeeta coat. Too cute.

Deer Park

Lauren and I took went over to the Great Smoky Mountains National Part this afternoon to visit the Cataloochee Valley...one of our favorite places in the mountains. Usually you can see the Elk but today we had no such luck...but we were able to get very close to some deer. This is a cell phone shot of one of the deer right outsider of our car window. They did not seem the least bit frightened of us.

Gavin Goes Swimming

This is a video from this fall. Gavin loves to go swimming and we will often take him out to Lake Junaluska to go "Dock Diving." Yes, that is a real life vest :)

Mountain Vistas

Is this not an amazing photo? Another member on one of my favorite web sites, Weather Underground too it yesterday. I love living in the Smoky Mountains and think they are the most beautiful mountains in the world...but sometimes the mountains out west will give them a run for their money.

It has been warmer than usual lately but all that should end tonight. A strong cold front is coming through today bring with it cold wind, rain and possibly some snow tonight. I wonder what the second half of winter will bring us. It is usually then that we get most of our snow.
